Diatrizoic acid dihydrate is an oxidant agent with high reactivity to nucleic acids. When it reacts with viral DNA, it causes a break in the DNA chain at the site of contact, resulting in cell death. The compound also reacts with DNA in bacteria and human cells, causing a change in the configuration of the molecule and leading to cell death.
