Echothiophat-Jodid ist eine organophosphorverbindung, die hauptsächlich als Medikament zur Behandlung von Glaukom und als miotisches Mittel zur Verengung der Pupille des Auges verwendet wird. Es wirkt als irreversibler Inhibitor des Enzyms Acetylcholinesterase, was zu erhöhten Acetylcholinspiegeln an den Synapsen führt und die cholinerge Aktivität verbessert. Diese Verbindung zeichnet sich durch ihre Fähigkeit aus, biologische Membranen zu durchdringen, wodurch sie ihre Wirkung auf das Nervensystem ausüben kann. Echothiophat-Jodid wird typischerweise topisch in Form von Augentropfen verabreicht.
