It is detectable in plasma samples from pregnant women and healthy controls, but not in those from women with an abortion. 5alpha-Pregnan-20alpha-ol-3-one is immunoreactive for the streptococcus zooepidemicus, which has been implicated in the development of abortions. Tritiated 5alpha-pregnan-20alpha-ol-3-one can be used to measure its plasma concentrations.
