1-(1H-Imidazol-2-yl)propan-1-one is a potent antagonist of the histamine H2 receptor. It has been shown to have blood pressure lowering effects and is used in some pharmaceutical preparations for this purpose. 1-(1H-Imidazol-2-yl)propan-1-one is also an antimicrobial agent that inhibits bacterial growth by acting as a competitive inhibitor of the enzyme catalysis of amino acid metabolism. In addition, it can be used as a crosslinking agent in the synthesis of proteins or peptides.
