Gamma-Aminobuttersäure, allgemein bekannt als GABA, ist eine nicht-proteinogene Aminosäure, die als wichtiger Neurotransmitter im zentralen Nervensystem dient. Sie ist durch ihr vier Kohlenstoffatome umfassendes Rückgrat gekennzeichnet, mit einer Aminogruppe (-NH2) und einer Carbonsäuregruppe (-COOH), die am terminalen Kohlenstoff angebracht sind. GABA spielt eine entscheidende Rolle bei der Hemmung der neuronalen Erregbarkeit im gesamten Nervensystem und trägt somit zur Regulierung des Muskeltonus sowie zur Modulation von Angst- und Stressreaktionen bei. Es ist ein farbloser, geruchloser Feststoff, der in Wasser löslich ist, was es biologisch verfügbar für verschiedene physiologische Funktionen macht. GABA wird im Gehirn aus Glutamat, einer anderen Aminosäure, durch die Wirkung des Enzyms Glutaminsäure-Decarboxylase synthetisiert. Zu seinen therapeutischen Anwendungen gehören die Behandlung von Angststörungen, Epilepsie und anderen neurologischen Erkrankungen. Darüber hinaus wird GABA häufig auf seine potenziellen Auswirkungen auf die Schlafregulation und die kognitive Funktion untersucht. Als Nahrungsergänzungsmittel wird es aufgrund seiner angeblichen beruhigenden Wirkungen vermarktet, obwohl seine Wirksamkeit bei oraler Einnahme ein Thema laufender Forschung bleibt.

Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is a neurotransmitter that inhibits the transmission of nerve impulses in the brain. GABA binds to specific receptors and blocks voltage-dependent calcium channels, which are ion channels that allow the passage of calcium ions into cells. GABA also has a number of other functions, including biochemical properties, its role in brain function and drug interactions. The GABA receptor is found on neurons and is subject to modulation by drugs that interact with GABA receptors. In addition, GABA can react with water vapor to produce hydrogen bonding interactions. This reaction is used in electrochemical impedance spectroscopy as an analytical tool for determining the concentration of free water in a sample.
