Ethylenediamintetraessigsäure (EDTA) ist ein vielseitiges Chelatmittel, das in verschiedenen Anwendungen weit verbreitet ist, einschließlich Medizin, Landwirtschaft und industriellen Prozessen. Es ist ein farbloser, geruchloser kristalliner Feststoff, der in Wasser löslich ist und einen stabilen Komplex mit Metallionen bildet. EDTA hat die Fähigkeit, sich an divalente und trivalente Metallionen zu binden, sie effektiv zu sequestrieren und ihre Reaktivität zu verhindern. Diese Eigenschaft macht es wertvoll in Anwendungen wie der Entfernung von Metallionen in der Wasseraufbereitung sowie in der Pharmazie zur Entgiftung von Schwermetallen. In biologischen Systemen wird EDTA verwendet, um Blei- und Quecksilbervergiftungen zu behandeln, indem es deren Ausscheidung erleichtert.
