Methylbutyrat ist ein Ester, der aus Buttersäure und Methanol gebildet wird und durch sein fruchtiges Aroma gekennzeichnet ist, das oft an Äpfel oder Ananas erinnert, was ihn in der Lebensmittel- und Duftstoffindustrie beliebt macht. Es hat eine chemische Formel von C5H10O2 und ein Molekulargewicht von etwa 102,14 g/mol. Methylbutyrat ist eine farblose Flüssigkeit, die in organischen Lösungsmitteln löslich ist, aber eine begrenzte Löslichkeit in Wasser hat. Sein Siedepunkt ist relativ niedrig, typischerweise bei etwa 102-104°C, und es hat einen Flammpunkt von etwa 25°C, was darauf hinweist, dass es brennbar ist.
