The hydroxyl group reacts with Iodosobenzene to form an iodide ion that can be measured by nmr spectroscopy. This reaction is affected by the presence of other atoms or molecules that have electron donating properties, such as an oxygen atom or a carbonyl group. TMAO can also be used in cancer research to study how tumors develop resistance to chemotherapy drugs.
