Demeclocyclinhydrochlorid ist ein Breitbandantibiotikum, das zur Klasse der Tetracycline gehört und hauptsächlich zur Behandlung verschiedener bakterieller Infektionen eingesetzt wird. Es zeichnet sich durch seine Fähigkeit aus, die Proteinsynthese in Bakterien zu hemmen, indem es an die 30S ribosomale Untereinheit bindet, wodurch das Wachstum und die Fortpflanzung der Mikroorganismen verhindert werden. Diese Verbindung wird typischerweise oral verabreicht und ist bekannt für ihre Wirksamkeit gegen eine Reihe von grampositiven und gramnegativen Bakterien. Demeclocyclinhydrochlorid wird auch zur Behandlung von Erkrankungen wie Akne und bestimmten Arten von Infektionen eingesetzt, die durch resistente Bakterien verursacht werden. Neben seinen antibakteriellen Eigenschaften wurde es auch zur Behandlung von Erkrankungen wie der inadäquaten Sekretion des antidiuretischen Hormons (SIADH) eingesetzt, da es die Fähigkeit hat, nephrogenen Diabetes insipidus zu induzieren.
