Ceftriaxone is an antibacterial agent that has a broad spectrum of activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Ceftriaxone binds to the beta-lactam ring of the bacterial cell wall, inhibiting the synthesis of peptidoglycan, which is necessary for the bacterial cell wall to maintain its shape. Ceftriaxone can be used to treat a number of bacterial infections and is active against both aerobic and anaerobic bacteria. Ceftriaxone has been shown effective against drug-resistant strains, such as staphylococcus aureus and escherichia coli. It has also been shown to be active against strains resistant to other antibiotics such as erythromycin, penicillin, tetracycline, chloramphenicol, and clindamycin. Ceftriaxone's molecular structure was determined by X-ray crystallography.
