It has also been used as an impurity in ion-exchange chromatography and as an acidic reagent in the preparation of pharmaceutical formulations. 2-Oxo-1-pyrrolidineacetic acid ethylester is a racemic mixture, containing equal amounts of two enantiomers, which can be separated by column chromatography on silica gel. The separation of these enantiomers was achieved using a butanoic acid mobile phase with a flow rate of 1 mL/min. The elution order was found to be (R)-2-oxo-1-pyrrolidineacetic acid ethylester > (S)-2-oxo-1-pyrrolidineacetic acid ethylester.
