It is an inhibitor of DNA synthesis and RNA transcription by blocking the enzyme RNA polymerase II, and also inhibits protein synthesis by inhibiting the enzyme ribosomal protein S12. 4-(5-Formylfuran-2-yl)-N-methylbenzene-1-sulfonamide is effective against both Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria, as well as yeast.
