Phentolaminhydrochlorid ist ein nicht-selektiver Alpha-Adrenozeptor-Antagonist, der hauptsächlich zur Behandlung von Bluthochdruck und zur Behandlung von Phäochromozytomen, einem Tumor der Nebenniere, der Katecholamine sekretiert, eingesetzt wird. Es handelt sich um ein weißes bis fast weißes kristallines Pulver, das in Wasser löslich ist und einen pH-Wert von 4,5 bis 6,5 in Lösung hat. Die Verbindung wirkt, indem sie die Alpha-1- und Alpha-2-Adrenozeptoren blockiert, was zu einer Vasodilatation und einem Rückgang des Blutdrucks führt. Die chemische Formel lautet C17H20N2•HCl, und sie hat ein Molekulargewicht von etwa 288,82 g/mol. Phentolamin wird häufig durch Injektion verabreicht und kann auch in zahnärztlichen Verfahren verwendet werden, um die Wirkungen von Lokalanästhetika umzukehren.
