4-(2-Hydroxyethyl)-1-piperazinethansulfonsäure, allgemein bekannt als HEPES, ist ein zwitterionisches Pufferungsmittel, das in der biologischen und biochemischen Forschung weit verbreitet ist. Es hat einen pKa-Wert von etwa 7,5, was es besonders effektiv macht, um den physiologischen pH-Wert in Zellkulturen und biochemischen Assays aufrechtzuerhalten.
