Beschreibung:
Iridium ist ein dichtes, silberweißes Übergangsmetall, das zur Platin-Gruppe der Elemente gehört und bekannt ist für seine bemerkenswerte Widerstandsfähigkeit gegen Korrosion und Oxidation. Es hat einen hohen Schmelzpunkt und ist eines der korrosionsbeständigsten Metalle, was es in verschiedenen industriellen Anwendungen wertvoll macht. Iridium kommt in der Natur typischerweise als Legierung mit anderen Platinmetallen vor und wird oft aus Nickel- und Kupfererzen gewonnen. Seine Ordnungszahl ist 77 und es zeigt eine Vielzahl von Oxidationszuständen, wobei +3 und +4 die häufigsten in Verbindungen sind. Iridium wird in Hochtemperaturanwendungen, elektrischen Kontakten und Zündkerzen sowie in der Herstellung bestimmter Arten von Katalysatoren verwendet. Darüber hinaus wird Iridium aufgrund seiner Seltenheit und einzigartigen Eigenschaften auch in spezialisierten wissenschaftlichen Instrumenten und im Bereich der Schmuckherstellung eingesetzt. Seine hohe Dichte und Härte tragen zu seiner Haltbarkeit bei, während seine chemische Inertheit ihn für den Einsatz in rauen Umgebungen geeignet macht.
