Lanthan ist ein silberweißes, duktiles Metall, das zur Lanthanid-Serie des Periodensystems gehört, mit der Ordnungszahl 57 und der CAS-Nummer 7439-91-0. Es zeichnet sich durch seinen relativ hohen Schmelzpunkt und seine Dichte im Vergleich zu anderen Metallen aus. Lanthan ist bekannt für seine Fähigkeit, Feuchtigkeit zu absorbieren, und wird typischerweise in einer inertialen Atmosphäre oder in Öl gelagert, um Oxidation zu verhindern.
