Gadolinium ist ein silberweißes, verformbares und duktiles Seltenmetall, das unter der Lanthanoid-Serie im Periodensystem klassifiziert ist. Es hat die Ordnungszahl 64 und ist bekannt für seine einzigartigen magnetischen Eigenschaften, insbesondere seine Fähigkeit, bei Raumtemperatur ferromagnetisch zu werden, was unter den Lanthanoiden relativ selten ist. Gadolinium ist hochreaktiv, insbesondere in pulverförmiger Form, und kann schnell oxidieren, wenn es Luft ausgesetzt wird, wodurch eine schützende Oxidschicht entsteht.
