27-Nor-25-ketocholesterol is a synthetic product that is an inorganic compound. It has a competitive inhibition of intestinal cholesterol absorption and is used to lower blood cholesterol levels. 27-Nor-25-ketocholesterol is not active against the two main enzymes related to cholesterol synthesis, namely 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase and HMG coenzyme A reductase. 27-Nor-25-ketocholesterol can be used as an alternative for patients with liver disease or who are unable to take the usual medications because of intolerance. The drug inhibits the activity of these enzymes by competing with them for substrate binding sites on their respective enzyme proteins. 27-Nor-25-ketocholesterol has been shown to have estrogenic activity and may also act as a hormone antagonist. 27NOK has been shown to inhibit mitochondrial sulphatases and esterases, which are involved in the conversion of cholesterol into bile acids
