Ethanthiol, auch bekannt als Ethylmercaptan, ist eine farblose, brennbare Flüssigkeit mit einem starken, unangenehmen Geruch, der an faulen Kohl oder Knoblauch erinnert. Seine chemische Formel ist C2H6S und es wird als Thiol klassifiziert, das durch das Vorhandensein einer Sulfhydrylgruppe (-SH) gekennzeichnet ist. Mit einem relativ niedrigen Siedepunkt ist Ethanthiol in Wasser löslich und hat eine höhere Dichte als Wasser. Es wird häufig als Geruchsstoff für Erdgas verwendet, was die Erkennung von Lecks aufgrund seines starken Geruchs in niedrigen Konzentrationen ermöglicht.
