CAS:Flunixin is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug that is eliminated in the urine. The terminal half-life of flunixin and its metabolite, 5-hydroxyflunixin, are approximately 2 hours and 4 hours, respectively. Flunixin has a linear calibration curve with an R2 value of 0.9993. This drug can be quantified using liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) by preparing the sample with sodium carbonate to hydrolyze any ester groups to the corresponding acid form and then using LC-MS/MS to detect the parent compound and metabolite. The limit of detection for flunixin is 10 ng/mL; the limit of quantification is 20 ng/mL. The concentration of flunixin was found to be 0.14 ± 0.03 µg/mL in human food samples that were analyzed by this method.
