Ethyl 3-hydroxybenzoate is a preservative that has been shown to be effective against a variety of microorganisms, including gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. It has been shown to bind with iron, which prevents it from interacting with tyrosinase, an enzyme necessary for the production of melanin. Ethyl 3-hydroxybenzoate also inhibits the activity of benzodiazepine receptor, which reduces the effects of benzodiazepines in the brain.
