4-Chloro-1-(β-D-2-deoxyribofuranosyl)imidazo[4,5-c]pyridine (4CPD) is a synthetic nucleoside with antiviral properties. It inhibits the synthesis of DNA by competing with natural deoxyribonucleosides for incorporation into the growing DNA strand. 4CPD also has antimicrobial and anticancer activities.
The cytotoxic activity of 4CPD was first reported in 1971 and its antiviral activity was discovered in 1972. 4CPD has shown to be an effective inhibitor of HIV replication in vitro and in vivo. In addition, it has been shown to inhibit the growth of cancer cells without affecting normal cells.
