Tetrabrombisphenol A (TBBPA) ist ein bromierter Flammschutzmittel, das häufig in verschiedenen Anwendungen eingesetzt wird, insbesondere in der Herstellung von Epoxidharzen und gedruckten Schaltungen. Es zeichnet sich durch seine chemische Struktur aus, die aus zwei phenolischen Gruppen besteht, die durch eine Kohlenstoffbrücke verbunden sind, mit vier Bromatomen, die an den aromatischen Ringen substituiert sind. TBBPA ist bei Raumtemperatur ein weißer bis off-white fester Stoff und ist unter normalen Bedingungen relativ stabil. Es hat eine geringe Löslichkeit in Wasser, ist jedoch in organischen Lösungsmitteln löslich, was seine Einarbeitung in Polymermatrizen erleichtert. TBBPA ist bekannt für seine Wirksamkeit bei der Verringerung der Entflammbarkeit, was es in der Elektronik und in Baumaterialien wertvoll macht. Es wurden jedoch Bedenken hinsichtlich seiner Umweltpersistenz und möglicher gesundheitlicher Auswirkungen geäußert, da es bioakkumulieren und endokrine Funktionen bei Wildtieren und Menschen stören kann.
