Kanamycin ist ein Aminoglykosid-Antibiotikum, das hauptsächlich zur Behandlung von bakteriellen Infektionen eingesetzt wird, insbesondere von solchen, die durch gramnegative Bakterien verursacht werden. Es wird aus dem Bakterium *Micromonospora kanamycetica* gewonnen. Kanamycin wirkt, indem es die bakterielle Proteinsynthese hemmt, was letztendlich zum Zelltod führt. Die Verbindung zeichnet sich durch ihre Fähigkeit aus, an die 30S-ribosomale Untereinheit zu binden und den Übersetzungsprozess zu stören.
