Lumefantrin ist eine antimalarische Verbindung, die hauptsächlich in Kombination mit Artemether zur Behandlung von Malaria eingesetzt wird, insbesondere in Gebieten mit chloroquin-resistenten Stämmen von Plasmodium falciparum. Es wird als Phenanthrenmethanol-Derivat klassifiziert und weist eine komplexe chemische Struktur auf, die zu seinen pharmakologischen Eigenschaften beiträgt. Lumefantrin zeichnet sich durch seine Lipophilie aus, die seine Absorption und Bioverfügbarkeit bei oraler Verabreichung verbessert. Die Substanz hat eine relativ lange Halbwertszeit, die effektive Dosierungsschemata ermöglicht. Es wirkt, indem es den Häm-Entgiftungsprozess im Malariaparasiten hemmt, was zur Ansammlung von toxischem Häm und letztendlich zum Tod des Parasiten führt.
