3-(Benzyloxy)-2-hydroxybenzaldehyde is an enamine that is used in the synthesis of benzofuran derivatives. This compound can be synthesized by a sequence of reactions that starts with the condensation of benzaldehyde and 2-hydroxyacetophenone. The lactaldehyde formed in this reaction is then converted to the desired product by treatment with sodium methoxide. 3-(Benzyloxy)-2-hydroxybenzaldehyde may also be used for the asymmetric synthesis of benzoquinones, imines, and other heterocycles.
