This drug is phosphorylated in vivo to the corresponding diphosphate and triphosphate, which inhibits viral DNA synthesis and thus prevents the virus from replicating. E-5-(2-Carbomethoxyvinyl)-2'-deoxy-5'-O-DMT-uridine can be used as an antiviral agent against herpes simplex virus (HSV).
