It has antiviral activity, as it inhibits DNA and RNA synthesis. 3'-Azido-3'-deoxy-N6-methyladenosine is an effective inhibitor of HIV replication in vitro and in vivo and has been shown to inhibit the growth of cancer cells in mice. The compound binds to the ribonucleotide reductase enzyme, which prevents the conversion of ribonucleotides to deoxynucleotides, inhibiting DNA and RNA synthesis. 3'-Azido-3'-deoxy-N6-methyladenosine is being developed as a potential anticancer agent because it may inhibit tumor growth by blocking the production of ATP and reducing intracellular levels of adenosine triphosphate (ATP).
