2-Hydroxy-2-(2-iodophenyl)acetic acid is a diethyl ester of malonic acid. It has been shown to be a potential precursor to 2-hydroxy-2-(2-iodophenyl)acetic acid, which is an optical isomer of the drug carmofur. This compound can be obtained by decarboxylation of diethyl malonate and subsequent hydrolysis of the diester with hydrochloric acid. The optical isomer of carmofur has been shown to have antiangiogenic and anticancer properties.
