As such it is a prohormone. Pregnenolone is a GABAA antagonist and increases neurogenesis in the hippocampus. It is a modulator of cytochrome P 450-3A.

It is an agonist of the GABA receptor and has been shown to have antidepressant effects in hamsters. 5α-Pregnan-3β-ol-20-one 3β-acetate has also been shown to have antiaggressive effects in mice and to decrease hormone levels in animals. The drug has been found to be safe for use in humans and does not affect fertility. 5α-Pregnan-3β-ol-20-one 3βacetate has been shown to be effective only when administered at high doses, which may be due to its poor oral bioavailability.
