Carbidopa methyl ester is a prodrug that is converted to L-DOPA in the brain. It is used for the treatment of Parkinson's disease and other conditions caused by low levels of dopamine. Carbidopa methyl ester does not cross the blood-brain barrier, so it must be taken by mouth or injected into the fluid around the spine. The drug is usually given with carbidopa, a decarboxylase inhibitor that prevents conversion of L-DOPA to dopamine outside the brain. This combination has been shown to be effective in treating symptoms of Parkinson's disease, such as tremors and muscle stiffness. Carbidopa methyl ester can also be used for other purposes such as carboxamides and fasteners with active substances like pharmaceutical products.
