Rel-(3R,5R)-fluvastatin sodium is an impurity standard of fluvastatin that is used in the development of new drugs. The substance has been shown to inhibit cholesterol synthesis by inhibiting 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase and is a potent inhibitor of cholesterol biosynthesis.
