Rifaximin is a non-absorbable antibiotic that is used to treat bowel disease, including hepatic encephalopathy, postoperative ileus, and inflammatory bowel disease. It is also used as an adjuvant therapy in the treatment of radiation-induced diarrhea and infectious hepatitis. Rifaximin inhibits the growth of viruses by inhibiting viral replication in cells. Rifaximin binds to the RNA polymerase enzyme and prevents transcription of viral genes. This drug has been shown to be safe for use in patients with inflammatory bowel disease or obesity who are receiving chemotherapy or radiation therapy. The safety profile of rifaximin supports its use as an adjuvant therapy for these conditions.
