Diethyl oxalate is a sulfa drug that has low potency and can be used as a substitute for methyl ethyl or diethyl. It is used in biological studies and is structurally similar to malonic acid. This reaction is reversible and the hydrolysis product can bind to nitrogen atoms, forming a nitronium ion. The binding of the drug may result in enzyme inhibition or changes in membrane permeability.
