Valnivudine hydrochloride is an antiviral drug that inhibits the replication of herpes viruses by inhibiting viral DNA polymerase. It is used to treat shingles and post-herpetic neuralgia. Valnivudine hydrochloride has been shown to be effective in reducing the severity and duration of symptoms, as well as reducing significant morbidity, when given to patients with shingles or post-herpetic neuralgia. Valnivudine hydrochloride also has a role in the prevention of transmission of HIV from mother to child during pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding.
