This protein regulates the bioavailability of sex hormones in the bloodstream by controlling how much is free (active) versus bound (inactive). It plays a crucial role in hormone transport and regulation by carrying these hormones in the blood and influencing their activity in tissues. Higher SHBG levels result in less free testosterone and estrogen available for use, while lower SHBG levels increase the amount of free hormones, potentially amplifying their physiological effects.
