4-Epitetracycline is an antibiotic that belongs to the tetracycline class of antibiotics. It is a prodrug that is metabolized in vivo to the active form, tetracycline. 4-Epitetracycline inhibits bacterial growth by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit and interfering with protein synthesis. The rate constant for this process is 1.6 x 10(-4) M-1s-1, which is much slower than other tetracyclines such as chlortetracycline. This property makes 4-epitetracycline more potent at low concentrations than other tetracyclines. 4-Epitetracycline has been shown to be effective against a wide range of bacteria including E. coli, Bacillus subtilis, and Proteus mirabilis isolates as well as bacteria found in soil and water samples with low pH values (5). 4-
