Naphthalene is a colorless liquid with a distinctive odor, commonly used as an insecticide and for the manufacture of other chemicals. It can be found in cigarette smoke, vehicle exhaust, and even in the air we breathe. Naphthalene is also found in coal tar, oil shale and petroleum. This toxic compound has been shown to cause a variety of symptoms including lethargy, headache, nausea and vomiting, and even death. The sequences of naphthalene-induced toxicity have been studied extensively in both animals and humans. In mice, naphthalene exposure leads to erythrocyte hemolysis by inhibiting the synthesis of G6PDH enzyme. Naphthalene also causes cancer in rats and mice when injected into their stomachs or lungs.
