Pyocyanin is a natural compound that is produced by the opportunistic fungal species Pseudomonas aeruginosa. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of human polymorphonuclear leukocytes and is capable of altering nuclear DNA. The production of pyocyanin by P. aeruginosa results in the formation of reactive oxygen species, which may contribute to the pathogenesis of this infection. Pyocyanin also has hypoglycemic effects in mice when administered in high doses. This effect may be due to its ability to inhibit insulin release from beta cells in pancreatic islets.
