NST was shown to be active against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, as well as fungi. It has been shown that NST is a potent inhibitor of fatty acid biosynthesis in bacteria. The biological properties of NST have also been studied by reconstituting it with fatty alcohols, which are used as excipients in pharmaceutical preparations. Chromatographic methods were used to analyze the binding between NST and its analogues with proteins. These methods can also be used for other purposes such as radiation sterilization or determining pharmaceutical dosage.
