The reaction of triphenyl phosphite with hydrochloric acid produces methyl ethyl chloride and hydroxide, which are both gases. The conversion of triphenyl phosphite to a fatty acid is accomplished by heating it under high pressure, followed by treatment with a base such as sodium methoxide. Triphenyl phosphite is used for the production of zirconium oxide and thermal expansion measurements.
