2-Benzylideneheptan-1-ol is a potential biomarker that can be used to identify and quantify the amount of chemical substances in environmental samples. 2-Benzylideneheptan-1-ol has been shown to be a cationic surfactant with a high molecular weight and low vapor pressure. The compound is chemically stable, but may react with strong oxidizing agents. In order to analyze this compound, the sample must be prepared by extracting the fatty acids from the sample using a solvent such as hexane, followed by removal of the solvent.
