Methylmercury chloride is a toxic compound that belongs to the group of mercury compounds. It can be found in the environment as a result of human activities, such as coal-fired power plant emissions and metal production. Methylmercury chloride is used in biochemical studies as a model for methylmercury toxicity. Methylmercury chloride has been shown to inhibit mitochondrial membrane potential and cause oxidative stress, which leads to cell death by apoptosis. Methylmercury chloride also induces genotoxic activity and causes DNA fragmentation, although it does not cause chromosomal aberrations or sister chromatid exchange.
