Beschreibung

Homosalate is a coumarin derivative that is used as an active ingredient in sunscreens. It absorbs the radiation of UV light and transforms it into harmless heat. Homosalate has been shown to be effective against skin cancer cells in vivo, but does not have any effect on the growth of bacteria. Homosalate is also a potent antimicrobial agent and can be used for wastewater treatment. The monosodium salt of homosalate is synthesized from gyrophoric acid and sodium salicylate by heating them together in the presence of water. The resulting product can then be purified by crystallization or recrystallization methods. Analytical methods for homosalate include synchronous fluorescence and anhydrous sodium sulfite precipitation with sulfuric acid.
