2-Amino-2-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)acetic acid is a chemical analog of the naturally occurring amino acid L-tyrosine. It has an inhibitory effect on glutamate, which may be due to its ability to demethylate and inactivate tyrosinase, thus inhibiting the production of melanin. 2-Amino-2-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)acetic acid also has a redox potential that can lead to spontaneous oxidation reactions. This chemical is biosynthesized from phenylalanine and trifluoroacetic acid by granule cells in the brain. The physiological effects of this compound are unclear, but it has been shown to have a tyrosinase inhibitory effect on rat granule cells.
