Dibenzo[A,I]pyrene is a carcinogenic hydrocarbon that can be found in cigarette smoke. It is used as an analytical tool to measure the transport properties of lipophilic molecules. Dibenzo[A,I]pyrene has been shown to have genotoxic activity and can cause mutations in DNA and RNA. The rate of mutation can be affected by the presence of other compounds, such as chlorogenic acids or fatty acids. Dibenzo[A,I]pyrene also binds to DNA and forms covalent adducts with N7-guanine and O6-guanine residues, which are located at the base of the major groove of DNA. Dibenzo[A,I]pyrene also reacts with the matrix effect, which affects its fluorescence emission properties.
