3±,12²-Dihydroxycholanoic acid is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug that inhibits the synthesis of prostaglandins in the body. It is used to treat bowel disease and inflammatory diseases such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. 3±,12²-Dihydroxycholanoic acid causes decreased transport rates in the intestine and may have beneficial effects on cancer cells. The drug is also effective against HIV infection, which may be due to its ability to inhibit protein synthesis in the virus.
