Beschreibung

6β-Hydroxy progesterone (6BHP) is a metabolite of progesterone that can be detected by chromatographic methods. 6BHP is found in rat brain, where it is synthesized from progesterone. The product is also expressed in rat liver and the enzyme activity of 6BHP hydroxylase has been detected in rat liver microsomes. 6BHP is metabolized to the active form, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), which binds to the androgen receptor and has been shown to have hormonal activity. Progesterone can be converted into 6β-hydroxyprogesterone by cytochrome P450 enzymes, such as CYP3A4. This conversion takes place primarily in the brain, testis, ovaries, and endometrium.
