2,2'-Binaphthyl is a liquid crystal that has been shown to have vibrational and conformational spectra. It has also been shown to react with hydroxy groups in the solution, forming a ligand. The alkylthio group of 2,2'-binaphthyl reacts with primary alcohols to form a functional compound. 2,2'-Binaphthyl is resistant to light and has been used in devices as an indicator for fluorescence or as an agent for chemical reactions.
