Biphenyl-3,3'-dicarboxylic acid (BPDA) is an aromatic hydrocarbon that has a high oxidation resistance. BPDA is used in the production of polyester with improved properties and as a ligand for metal ions. It is also used in the production of luminescent materials and photocatalysts. The structure of BPDA is similar to the structure of cholesterol, which may account for its effect on ovaries and fertility. BPDA has been shown to inhibit the synthesis of progesterone in rat ovaries.
